Probiotics have become almost synonymous with gut health.
But there's an important misconception:
A probiotic isn't automatically beneficial simply because it contains "good bacteria."
The strain, dose, health condition and individual taking it all matter.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, provide a health benefit.
That definition is important because not every fermented food or bottle containing microorganisms has demonstrated a specific health benefit.
Probiotic labels frequently advertise billions—or even hundreds of billions—of colony-forming units (CFUs).
It's tempting to assume the product with the largest number must be best.
That's not how probiotic science works.
A product containing a larger quantity of microorganisms isn't necessarily more appropriate than a lower-dose product containing a strain that has actually been studied for the outcome you're trying to address.
Think of bacteria somewhat like dogs.
A Chihuahua and a Labrador are both dogs, but they're certainly not identical.
Likewise, two microorganisms belonging to the same bacterial species can be different strains and can have different effects.
That's why evidence from one probiotic strain shouldn't automatically be applied to every product containing the same species.
Instead of asking:
"What's the best probiotic?"
Ask:
"What outcome am I trying to achieve?"
Research has examined particular probiotics for specific gastrointestinal conditions and circumstances, but results can't simply be generalized to every digestive symptom.
And some people don't need a probiotic supplement at all.
The intestinal microbiome doesn't depend exclusively on organisms coming from capsules.
Diet matters enormously.
Plant foods provide fibers and other compounds that interact with intestinal microorganisms.
Rather than focusing exclusively on adding bacteria, I often want to know:
What are you feeding the microorganisms already living there?
A varied diet containing vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and other plant foods can provide a diverse array of substrates and naturally occurring plant compounds.
When I evaluate a probiotic, I look beyond the marketing on the front of the bottle.
Important considerations include:
Identified organisms and strains
Evidence for the intended use
Effective dose
Product quality
Storage requirements
Individual health history
That's very different from simply buying the probiotic with the highest CFU count.
